U active legal licenses in Lake Oswego in June compared to the previous month

The number of active legal licenses in Lake Oswego remained the same in June compared to May, according to the Oregon State Bar.

In total, Lake Oswego registered one active legal license in June.

Oregon's public defense system remains under strain after a years-long shortage of attorneys for people entitled to court-appointed counsel. The Oregon Public Defense Commission's adopted six-year plan found the state needed 416 additional full-time-equivalent attorneys to handle its current adult criminal caseload and projected the gap could rise to 474 by 2031 without added staffing. OPDC also reported that 1,231 people were unrepresented statewide as of March 31, 2026, down 14.4% from the end of February.

As of July 2026, average lawyer salaries in Oregon ranged from $101,601 for an entry-level attorney handling routine legal work to $257,471 for highly experienced attorneys managing complex cases with significant autonomy. Mid-level attorneys, such as those in Attorney III roles—who handle highly complex legal work with moderate supervision—earned on average $190,543 in Oregon, compared to $187,635 nationwide.

The United States has more than 1.3 million active lawyers, with employment projected to grow 4% between 2024 and 2034, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
