Mt. Vernon RP Lumber store manager: Composite decking 'eliminates the need for maintenance'
When selecting decking options, there are a few things to pay attention to. John White, store manager of Mt. Vernon R.P. Lumber, said the main things to consider when making or replacing your house's deck is cost and materials.
R.P. Lumber provides a wide range of decking brands, including TimberTech, Fiberon and Trex. Trex holds the distinction of being the pioneer in composite decking, utilizing recycled plastic instead of wood fibers. In contrast, TimberTech and Fiberon use a blend that combines wood fibers sourced from various hardwoods with plastic. This incorporation of wood fibers allows for better thermal expansion control, as the addition of virgin plastic reduces contraction during times when the weather fluctuates.
"You have multiple choices when selecting decking options," White said. "Although composite decking costs more, it eliminates the need for maintenance. On the other hand, our less-expensive alternative -- five quarter treated decking -- requires yearly maintenance."
According to R.P. Lumber's website, composite decking is available in a variety of different colors. It is also workable and can be cut into different kinds of designs and patterns.
Unlike wood decking, most composite decking typically comes with warranties that extend up to about 20-25 years. Wood decking, however, usually does not come with a warranty, as the responsibility for yearly maintenance falls on the home or building owner.
The timeline for deck construction depends on the contractor's availability, but R.P. Lumber aims to deliver customers' decking on the same day they buy it, as long as their desired material is available. In order to have a deck ready within a month, White said, customers need to decide on the type of decking they'd prefer and the cost they're willing to pay. They should also visit the store to have the deck designed accordingly and schedule the necessary arrangements.
R.P. Lumber design services cover decks, kitchens and baths, and post-frame buildings, serving both "do-it-yourselfers and professional contractors."
Various RP Lumber locations primarily sell Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon decking. Availability varies by location, and customers should ask their local RP Lumber about the features and benefits of each brand.
Founded in 1977 in Southern Illinois, R.P. Lumber has more than 80 stores nationally. The Mt. Vernon, Illinois, store is located at 12585 North Sparrow Lane.
