Unarmed robberies: 173 calls to Philadelphia police a decrease in four-week period ending March 5
There were 173 in the four weeks ending March 5, a 19.2 percent decrease from the four weeks before.
The four-week period ending Feb. 5 was the worst in Philadelphia so far year with 214 incidents.
Philadelphia is consistently ranked one of the least safe cities in the US. Gun violence has increased in recent years to near the highs of the early 1990s.
State Rep. Martina White, in an op-ed column for Broad+Liberty, claimed the rise in crime can be blamed on “the failed leadership of Democratic officials," specifically “District Attorney Larry Krasner, who took over in 2018 and has seen a spike in homicides ever since.”
A report in ProPublica tracing the rise in crime across Philadelphia and the US, said the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic “had the effect of undoing or freezing countless public and social services that are believed to have a preventative effect on violence.”
